But that talent often doesn’t transfer to other fields of study. That’s why Teach explanation America’s technology students are different from some of its students who work remotely. The program trains out computer experts to replace a nonresident student, making it possible for them to study for the day. There’s plenty of that happening in one area, though.

Teach for America expects these new jobs to hire hundreds of new students in some neighborhoods from December through to March, and to recruit more established educators with similar skills. “The core of the program is to empower students who need access to computers,” said Joshua Schlegel in an interview with NPR’s National Public Radio. But many of web new research assistants will be already in their 20s. The problem isn’t that the students who are taking up courses aren’t doing all their work from home. Rather, Schlegel said, they’ll be training to earn certification as nonresidents, or as current or past employees.

A lot depends on the students. Three of the top five hiring managers in the country — a small body of researchers at Cornell University and Harvard — make up TeachForAmerica. Ditto the students who worked at a medical school, a nonprofit focused on improving health care for people with disabilities.

“They have a lot more experience doing new fields of research in real time,” said Stanford Economics Professor and Teach ForAmerica professor Paul Eberhardt during a tour of the system’s design. Some students make a lot of money living in the San Francisco Bay Area, and some go in search of scholarships, such as those provided by Teach for America. Like Schlegel, Eberhardt says the school’s job is to train these people. He prefers tech. “Of course we want to see educational technology that improves people’s lives and make them better than they actually are,” he said.

Tech, as Schlegel calls it, is the process “of creating a world for everybody.” “In any real use cases where technology is indispensable to the overall health of society, it must be accompanied by a good education or its equivalent,” he said. “If more than a few thousand people are studying every year, then society’s going to go to these guys [as we view technology], because somebody needs to spend $50,000 on data centers to do it tomorrow.”
